If you select Number Grades, Letter and Number Grades, or Decimal Grades as your grading scale, some colleges may require you to complete the Number to Letter Grade Scale Conversion.
This step takes place on the Enter Coursework screen after you’ve added your high school.
Steps to Complete the Grading Scale
- Go to the Enter Coursework screen.
- Click on the Number to Letter Grade Scale Conversion section.
- Select the grade scale used at your school (e.g., 100-point scale, 4-point scale).
- Enter:
-
Your school’s Highest Unweighted Grade
→ This is the highest numeric grade a student can earn without weighting for honors or AP courses. For example, on a 100-point scale, this is usually 100. On a 4-point scale, it will be 4.0. -
Your school’s Lowest Unweighted Grade
→ This is the lowest numeric grade a student can earn. For example, it could be 0, 50, or 1.0, depending on your school’s grading system.
-
Your school’s Highest Unweighted Grade
- Complete any other applicable fields (e.g., decimal grades, plus/minus grades). Leave fields blank if they don't apply.
- Match each Letter Grade to its corresponding Number Grade based on your school’s grading policy. Not Sure How To Complete The Number-To-Letter Grade Scale Conversion? Here's How To Find What You Need
- Click “This Looks Correct” to save and proceed.
Reviewing Pre-populated Grading Scale Information
If another student from your school has already completed the grading scale, STARS may pre-populate this section for you.
- Review all pre-populated fields carefully.
- Confirm that the highest and lowest unweighted grades, and all other values, match your school's actual policy.
- If anything is incorrect, edit the fields before clicking “This Looks Correct.”
Why This Step Is Important
The grading scale you enter determines which grade values are available when adding your course grades.
For example:
- If you complete the scale with 10 as the highest possible unweighted grade, you will not be able to record grades above 10.
- Similarly, if the lowest possible unweighted grade is too high, lower grade options may be missing when you attempt to record a course grade.
Tip: The course grade drop-down menu is based on your grading scale. Double-check your highest and lowest values to ensure you can enter all your grades correctly.
