This article explains how to enter your high school courses and grades by Subject Area using the STARS platform.
Before You Begin
- Use your transcript or online grade report.
- Do not estimate, round, or average grades.
- Do not complete this section from memory.
How to Enter Coursework by Subject Area
- Go to the Enter Coursework screen.
- If you attended more than one school, select the correct School.
- Under Selected School, select Subject Area from the drop-down labeled “I prefer to enter my coursework by.”
- Scroll to the Subject Area section.
- Find the appropriate subject (e.g. English, Mathematics, Science) and click the green pencil icon to begin entering courses.
Alert: Only enter courses that fall within the selected subject area.
Add a Course
- Complete the fields in the Add Course section:
- Academic Level: Select the grade level when the course was taken (e.g., 9th grade).
- Generic Course Title: Select the title that best matches the subject. If none apply, choose Other.
- Course Name: Enter the name as it appears on your transcript (if different).
- Course Level: Choose the appropriate level (e.g., Honors, AP, IB). If your school does not use any, choose Standard.

Course Length:
- Select Full Year if a final grade is given for the entire year.
- Select Semester, Trimester, or Quarter if final grades are given each term.
- For one-term courses, select the appropriate length and leave the other fields blank.

Grade: Enter the grade exactly as it appears on your transcript.
- Use the unweighted grade if both weighted and unweighted are listed.
- Select In Progress for 12th grade courses for which you have not yet received final grades.
- Click Add Course.
Grade Entry Reminders
Alert: Do not apply weight to your grades, average them, or convert them.
Do not enter your grade level (e.g., 10th) in the grade field. Enter the actual grade/marks/score received.
Record Courses for Other Subject Areas
- After saving a course, click Back to Summary to return to the subject area list.
- Select the next subject area and repeat the steps above.
- Use Other Subject Area to record courses that do not fit in any other category.
- Enter all of the courses that are listed on the transcript.

Tip: You can view and edit all coursework entered under the Currently Entered Coursework section.
